The Transportation Hub - New York
The sculptural form of the Transportation Hub project is achieved by the modular repetition of the structural steel ribs that unify the complex composition, and provides dignity and beauty to the building's underground levels and pedestrian walkways.
During the cool spring and summer days, the operable skylight of the Oculus opens to bring part of the New York sky to the building, evocative of the Pantheon in Rome.

Still suggestive of adornments from many traditions, the form can be summed up, according to Calatrava, by the image of a bird released from the hands of a child.
Between the ribs, the glass allows the entry of natural light, a powerful symbol of hope and vitality, to flood the place. Calatrava speaks of light as a structural element of the project, saying that the building is supported by "columns of light".
The structural steel ribs that form the Oculus extend upward, like open wings, to form a pair of baldachins. The platforms enjoy the natural light transmitted from above by generous openings made in the floors of the Mezzanine.
